Android Tablets - What Are They and What Products Are the Best Out There?

After the introduction of the iPad, people have fallen in love with the tablet PCs. A tablet PC is not a laptop in the sense that it does not have a folding screen although it is as powerful as a laptop in terms of comparable performance. It is just a tablet with a fully functional touch screen that will allow you to browse, watch videos, listen to audio, play games and even use it for taking notes and reading electronic books. The most important thing about tablet computers is that they are very, very portable. Unlike a laptop that requires a backpack or a laptop bag to carry around, the tablet computer will fit in most coat pockets or women's handbags.

However, the drawback to the iPad and other popular tablet computers such as the Samsung Galaxy is that they can get quite expensive. Most people cannot afford to spend about $400 on the latest iPad and just pass on the thought of owning a tablet PC. However, people with smaller budgets can now still own a tablet computer by buying a cheaper Android tablet.

http://images.gizmag.com/hero/1569_01.jpg

Android tablets are much cheaper than the iPad or the Galaxy. To understand why they are cheaper, you will need to know a little bit more about the Android operating system. All Android tablets use the Android operating system to run the tablet. This is an open source operating system that is free to use by anybody. In other words, any manufacturer can make a tablet PC and install the powerful Android operating system as software to run the tablet. The latest version of the Android operating system is the Android 2.2 version that is otherwise known as Froyo.

The free Android operating system has allowed many manufactures to come out with Android tablets that are much cheaper than the comparable iPad. Apple charges a premium price for their iPad simply because they were the first to come out with the concept of the tablet PC. Loyal fans of Apple will still shell out $400 on the iPad although most of them do not realize that they can get the same, if not better value by buying Android tablets that retail for a much cheaper price.

There are some Android tablets in the market today that you can buy for even half the price of the iPad or the Samsung Galaxy tab. The best part about Android tablets is that most of them will also use the same hardware that is used by reputed brands such as Samsung. For example, the Samsung Galaxy tab uses the Cortex A-8 or A-9 chip architecture. The Cortex A-8 and A-9 are open source technology which means that it is not just Samsung who has the right to install their chips on their tablet PCs. Many manufacturers of tablet PC's have taken advantage of the Cortex A-9 technology by installing it in their Android tablets.

Products like the iPad and Galaxy tablets are so expensive because the selling price includes a heavy marketing cost that has to be recovered. So, if you are going to buy a Tablet PC, you will be well advised to consider purchasing an Android tablet that will save you a lot of money while giving you the same powerful performance as the leading brands.

Android Tablets Vs. iPad

Android Tablets vs. iPad - this may well become the big tech debate of 2011. I will break down the differences for you and tell you what side I am on! There are several key differences between the two devices -

Operating System

Obviously, one of the largest differences between the two systems is the operating system. Android tablets are running on some version of the Android OS from Google, while Apple's iPad is running on Apple's iOS. Both are the same basic OS that runs on the companies' respective smart phones.

To me, this is just a matter of preference. These days, many developers prefer Android over iOS, as it is much easier to get a new app into Android's app market. However, every Android tablet (and phone) may run on a different version of the software, which can make it a bit unsettling for users, as some apps may work only on a newer version of Android, which every tablet may not get.

The companies that develop the tablets decide when to push an update of the Android software to each type of device, so one type might get an update, while others may wait for months, or never get an update at all.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lPpKezbTljM/TPhhB0WwBYI/AAAAAAAADFg/2Y--ov0uCQs/s400/Coby%2BKyros%2BMID7015%2BAndroid%2BTablet%2BPC.jpg

As far as I am concerned, there is no clear winner in this arena. If you get a chance, try each one and see which operating system you like best. Personally, I am a bigger fan of Android.

Screen Size

Having a big screen can be a plus or a minus depending on what you plan to use it for, and especially on how you plan to carry a tablet around. For example, I purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab, considered one of the best Android tablets currently on the market, and a big selling point for me ws the screen was actually much smaller than the iPad.

The iPad screen is over 10 inches, making almost as big as some small laptops. That can be great if you plan to carry it in a backpack all the time and want to watch videos on it, but it does make it harder to carry around. For me, the Galaxy Tab made more sense because I don't carry a backpack and like to bring it to meetings.

So, again, no clear winner here. You may want to decide first whether you want a wireless device that is portable or if you want the biggest screen possible. One caveat here, however - soon there will likely be tablets running Android on the market that have screens the size of the iPad.

Apps

You can have a discussion about Android tablets vs. iPad without talking about apps. Apps make or break the tablet in my opinion. Having used both operating systems extensively, I will say that, although the iPad certainly has more apps than Android, I have not been disappointed with Android and can find just about any kind of app I can think of. In addition, almost every company that makes an iPad app makes an Android app as well.

http://www.hardwaresphere.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/camangi-webstation-android-tablet-pc.jpg

In fact, in my estimation, given that Android sales are now surpassing iPhone, and the fact I mentioned above - that it is easier to develop apps and get in the Android market, I would not be surprised to see Android catch up the Apple in the future when it comes to apps.

Cost

It seems that even the best Android tablets are cheaper overall, and you can find some good, cheap Android tablets out there. Both have data plans, and you can't do much without a data plan on a tablet unless you stay in a wifi zone, so you will likely end up paying about the same there.

However, when it comes to the cost the device itself, Android wins.

This argument will rage on during 2011, but when it comes to Android Tablets vs. the iPad, I am all for Android!

Experience viewing cinemas the LCD way at home

Yes – for those enjoyed a film in theaters, it is totally a different experience. The Liquid Crystal Projector (LCD Projector) is the brain child of modern technologists. They thought why a cinema projector should be so big and cumbersome to install? Why not it be made handy and light weighted, so to take away anywhere you want and still produce films, videos, computer data and everything on a 100 inch or 150 inch screen with crystal clarity? The answer is latest LCD Home Cinema Projector – a compact light weighted box-like set up.

Of the three, HD-198 DVB-T is coming to you with added features like Digital TV tuner, built-in SD card and USB reader – to enable you view photos directly from your camera or films directly from an external hard drive of your computer or USB stick.
What is so special about these 3 LCD Projectors is the extended life of the bulb that produces light. Ordinarily these bulbs will last for just 2000 hours of usage and would need replacement at heavy cost. But here you get a bulb-life of nearly 4 times than that up to 8000 hours and the replacement will cost you a mere $60 – just 10%.

How Tablet PCs Are Developed

Tablet PCs developed slowly over the years, beginning from 1960. Developers need to be conversant with Microsoft's tools.

The main addition in the arena of tablet PC development involves Digital Ink technology and various other features accompanying it such as recognition, management and collection of ink. Some other additional parameters include screen operation in portrait mode and new user interface considerations.

http://www.mygadgetplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/apple-tablet-pc.jpg

Capabilities and Opportunities

There is no difference between mobile PCs and regular PCs. Still, some users and developers firmly believe that mobile PCs run on Windows CE, which is far from being the case.

The first Tablet PC generation runs on special version of windows, also known as Windows XP generation. This is usually a superset of Windows XP, which means that everything that Windows XP has to offer is available on Tablet PCs. There also are PC specific components, such as Windows Journal, besides components of Digital Ink collection.

Personal Computer Development

Development for mobile PCs isn't an unusual trade anymore, and the functionality of Tablet PC moves into the mainstream with Windows Vista. In the United States, mobile PCs have already begun to outsell desktop PCs.

A combination of these two facts indicates that each developer has to be aware of the ink enabled and mobile enabled scenarios as very few client applications are available, that don't require consideration of any such environments anymore.

Ink Support

Support for Digital Ink is the main feature of mobile PCs. Users can simply write on the device using pen, special stylus, recognized through electromagnetic digitizer. The possibilities are highly limited by imagination. The goal of mobile PCs lies in not just duplicating the writing experience on paper, but also significantly improving every aspect of it by adding fidelity, functionality and additional features unavailable on paper pads.

Mobile Apps

One of the big markets available with this type of PC is applications. With all mobile PCs, there is an app for any type of functionality you want. Whether it's looking up movie times, to actually watching a movie, someone out there has developed an application around your needs. Application developers need to be able to test their app, without the host PC, if they want their app to be ready around PC launch dates. Simulators are known to handle app development before an application is launched.

Of Windows And Tablets

Even before Windows 7 was released to retail, the tech industry already had its first taste of Windows 8. Rumors about cloud computing and improved performance were obvious and expected, but more recent reports of exciting features like a new interface shed a much different light on it.

http://tftscdn.nexus404.com/Blog/wp-content/uploads2/2007/09/fujitsu-t2010-lifebook.jpg

Microsoft has been understandably quiet about Windows 8 after the wild success of 7. There have been a few leaks every couple weeks, but we still don't have anything solid. Before Windows 8 Italia's report on the OS' new "Wind" interface, I thought this was mostly just Microsoft milking Windows 7 for all it was worth. However, these new rumors got me thinking; maybe it's not that Microsoft is hiding behind 7, but rather because Windows 8 will be such a major release that they don't even have a specific feature set locked down yet.

The New York Times reported this week that Steve Ballmer may be demoing a tablet running Windows 8 at CES. While they may not show many of the features of the operating system during the presentation, it's a position that Apple has quite clearly forced them into after their demonstration of OSX 10.7 in October.

Microsoft has also acknowledged their intent to introduce Windows-based tablets after the huge success of the iPad, but many tech analysts have knocked 7′s lack of a real touch interface. Even though the company purports that it has been optimized for touch, it's very clear that Windows is still a very mouse-oriented OS. Companies like ExoPC have tried to make 7 better suited for tablets with new software layers powered by the latest hardware.

Unfortunately, that hardware is the problem with many Windows tablets on the market right now. Unlike the iPad, most (if not all) 7-based tablets shown thus far have had thick(er), plastic bodies and unacceptable battery life. Even though the power is there, the tablet doesn't perform as well as the iPad simply because Windows wasn't designed for tablets-nor is it a valid solution to tablets' rising popularity.

The new rumors about a wildly different interface on Windows 8 are tantalizing; a 3D interface that adapts to you, rather than you adapting to it. However, Microsoft still may be missing the mark. Windows 8 Italia also reports that the interface will only be available to 64-bit installations and only on systems with 170MB or more video memory. These specifications aren't tablet specs, they're desktop specs.

http://www.tabletpcreview.com/assets/1913.jpg

Now, there's no reason to assume that Microsoft won't introduce another interface designed for tablets, but there's also no evidence to say they will. They desperately need to get back into the PC game, whether that be with traditional form factors or with tablets. At this point, though, every indication points to tablets, not desktops or laptops, as the future of computing in the consumer space.

Best Android Tablet Features You Need to Look For

In early 2010, after Apple's iPad shown successful debut and signaled the beginning of new tablet PC market, many computer hardware manufacturers noticed and acknowledged the possible large market for tablet PC and prepared during the year. Tablet PC, in design, should be light, portable, and inexpensive while the computing power should be fast enough for daily tasks such as web browsing, email, Twitter, and Facebook.

These tasks are simple enough so they did not want to deploy using Windows OS which requires higher computing power to run smoothly and it is not cheap either. That is why Google Android OS became the popular OS for the new tablet PC among the manufacturers. Android OS is open sourced, and publicly maintained and largely adopted by the smart phones. The latest publicly release version is v2.3 code name Gingerbread. But most of the latest devices come with version 2.2. Google recently announced v3.0 Honeycomb, but it is officially announced that this is for the tablet PC only at this time. Many consumers want to try out the latest version and that's why many manufacturers are planning to adopt Android 3.0 as soon as possible.

Now then what are the important features of Android tablet PC you want to look for when buying a tablet PC? I have listed the important features below starting from the most important to least.

*Processor: The heart of the any computing device. Lower end tablets install 600 MHz processor, but it is important to select a device with at least 1 GHz processor or you will experience noticeable delay. CortexA8 1GHz and NVIDIA's Tegra 1GHz are the popular 1GHz processors.

* Display size and resolution: Popular display sizes are 7 inch and 10 inch. It is mainly depend on your requirement. If you would like to use the table as quick web surfing device only at home and would like a large screen, you would definitely prefer 10 inch tablet. But if you want to bring your tablet around everywhere and enjoy, then you would definitely want to get 7 inch tablet.

* Operating System: Android 2.2 is the latest popular version and you want to look for it. It is known to be faster than previous versions and any other lower versions are not recommended. Also many people anticipate the latest version 3.0 codenamed Honeycomb, but there is no device available yet. It is known to be more adapted to the tablet PC. You know, Android was originally developed to be used with smaller sized smart phones. If you prefer Windows OS based tablet PC, you should be prepare to spend few hundred dollars more because Windows OS requires higher computing power and the expensive OS license fee too.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiebfbDWu8GSF3bqwcVRWsMz7UNuXM4mMPWK7tfP4Isb9vj1RKPCJNHWz_m2P5d_ydYZqio7DY2rpZSUHY9zpaXTaieqAKgXZNqR9dXWDegIGJ9IzjeJmPx3x6kUzqD2ZTKcx-aT6Eht2A/s1600/tablet_pc.jpg

* RAM, Storage, and SD slot: RAM memory size should around 512MB is good, but higher end devices come with 1GB memory. Default storage varies from 2GB to 32 GB or more. But usually they come with external SD card slots that supports up to 32GB So you want to make sure they have SD card slot.

* Internet 3G and Wi-Fi: This requirement is also depend on how you want to use your tablet. If you want to keep your tablet PC with you all the time, you would probably want to buy 3G supported version. But you need to spend few hundred dollars more in the 3G supported version. Some of tablet PC planned to be announced later in 2011 will have the blazing 4G such as Motorola Xoom. You can still bring around your Wi-Fi only version tablet PC and enjoy the Internet at various places since many public libraries, book stores, coffee shops, and airports provides free public Wi-Fi hotspot services.

  • Camera and Video recording: Does it have Camera? In rear or front or both? What is the pixel size? At least front camera is necessary, so you can video chat. Also you want to check if it supports 720 HD or Full HD video recording.

* Touch Screen: Capacitive or Resistive? Capacitive is better over resistive screen, but some prefers resistive. Capacitive screen detects the touch when touched with a electrical conductor such as human body. Resistive screen detects the touch when pressure on the screen is detected. It is more often better to work with fingernails or sharper object such as stylus than finger. Also make sure that it supports multi touch which is required for multi finger zoom in and out.

  • Battery power: How long does the battery last? iPad is known to last 10 hours of web surfing, watching movie, and listening music. In fact, if you can get from Android device with 10 hours support, it has very good battery.

  • Other connectivity and ports: USB, Bluetooth, 4G, HDMI output,

  • Other features: Accelerometer, GPS, Gyroscope.

The more important features should be Processor, Display Size and Storage size. Many other features are often provided as default features for the latest popular Android tablet PCs. But do not assume that the new fancy android tablet PC will have all the popular features. It is important that you visit their website or popular gadget review site and confirm the existence of desired feature from the detailed specifications before actually purchasing the product.

http://www.tabletpcmanufacturer.com/releases/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/hp-tx2.jpg

In terms of price, you usually have to pay around $500 ~ $700 for Wi-Fi version and $600 ~ $1000 for 3G version for higher ends tablet PC, but if you are willing to sacrifice some of the features, you can get a nice decent tablet PC around $300 too. I will talk about this later in a different article.

I hope that this introduction to the features of Android tablet PC helps you shopping for the best android tablet.

Introduction to Tablet PCs

The Tablet PC is a notebook or slate-shaped mobile computer that is approximately the size of a paper tablet. It gives us portability, flexibility and usability that are changing the way we work with our computers. Its touch screen or digitizing tablet technology allows the user to operate the computer with a stylus or digital pen instead of a keyboard or mouse.

http://drmussey.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/windows-tablet-xp.jpg

Tablet PCs will have two formats: the "convertible" model with an integrated keyboard and a display that rotates 180 degrees and can be folded down over the keyboard, and the "slate" model with only a screen and pen. They can use external wireless or USB keyboards. The most popular convertible tablet PCs are the Acer and Toshiba. The most popular slates are the Motion Computing/Gateway Computers, Fujitsu, and HP/Compaq.

Many Tablet PCs use a Wacom digitizer, which delivers pen-position input to the computer at a fast rate. Tablets with these digitizers project a small magnetic field above the screen that interacts with electronics in the tablet's stylus. The user therefore is able to rest their hand on the screen without affecting the image or mouse pointer; only movement of the stylus affects the mouse pointer.

Tablet PCs became available to the general public with the introduction of Microsoft's Windows Tablet PC Edition in the fall of 2002. Before then they were used in small markets in industry, medicine, and government. Now they are used by students and many professionals.

Let us now have a look at the improvements in Tablet PCs:

The battery life of Tablet PCs has increased a great deal. This gives us more freedom to do what we need to do when we need to do it. We're free to take our computers into meetings and classrooms and to take notes the way that's most familiar, by writing. Centrino technology has improved. This means that more powerful processors can be used with little or no loss of battery life compared to lower powered CPUs.

Better wireless support allows us to log on to networks more easily than ever, with built in firewire. All this convenience comes packaged in a 3 pound computer that's not much bigger than a paper tablet.

Those who don't type have the option to use handwriting, can use keyboard to enter data. Others may prefer speech input, or a combination of both. We're free to take our computers into meetings and classrooms and to take notes the way that's most familiar, by writing.

http://cdn.ubergizmo.com/photos/2009/6/archos-9pctablet.jpg

Tablet PCs are lighter than the majority of notebooks. Most weigh about 3 pounds or less. Size is also smaller, with the Tablet PC about the size of a paper tablet. Some of the newer Tablets have larger screen sizes or built-in drives. These can increase the weight considerably.

The Tablet PC uses a low or ultra-low voltage CPU chip that's actually considerably faster than its "number" indicates. This also improves battery life. With the introduction of the Intel Centrino and Dothan, the Intel-based Tablet PCs will be comparable with faster desktops. As an example, according to Intel, a Centrino 1.6Ghz processor is comparable to 2.4Ghx Pentium4-M.

Some Tablet PC models are including a CDRW-DVD drive within the unit. Some have USB or firewire models available. There are also third party drives available.

The Tablet PC can use the pen technology in PowerPoint presentations, etc. These annotations can be saved for future presentations or erased completely. Using a Tablet PC with a projector allows the presenter to annotate slides, etc as he speaks.

The Tablet PC can be used in both portrait and landscape modes. A touch of the button changes it instantly. There's no need to reboot.

Tablet PCs generally use a 1024x768 screen resolution. High-resolution displays and Microsoft's Clear Type display technology make the Tablet PC an excellent reading platform. Video is also improving with one model offering a resolution of 1400x1050.

Some Tablet PCs offer fingerprint scanners for increased security. There are also 3rd party devices such as USB pen drives that contain a security lock. Without the pen drive, the information on the Tablet PC is irretrievable.

Tablet PCs are changing the way we use computers. They'll continue to do so and in more ways than we're currently envisioning. As this year progresses, expect to see more innovations in features and size and even more availability and features galore, including dual core processors and better graphics.

Tablet Review - HP Slate 500 - The Very Best Windows Slate

The particularly long anticipated HP Slate is at last here, although with a fairly different set up than predicted. The HP Slate 500 which is available today for purchase stands out as the first legitimate Windows slate focused squarely at the enterprise market place. That's not to suggest, if you're a Windows-centric consumer, that it will not equally present a very good selection for personal use either.

What are the HP Slate features?
The HP Slate boasts a striking specification list having an 8.9-inch capacitive multitouch display screen, 1.86 GHz Intel Atom Cpu, 2GB SDRAM, 64GB internal memory space, USB and MicroSD slot, forward facing camera and 3 megapixel rear facing camera.

Who is the Slate 500 designed for?
It's regarded as an enterprise slate as it's targeted at the premium end of the market place, safely and securely hooks up to corporate systems, combines with business systems infrastructures and can run software that would most likely fit together with those usually made use of by the business world - just think Microsoft Office, supply solutions and alternative enterprise computer software.

What apps run on the HP Slate 500?
As this slate runs Windows, businesses or personal consumers can easily get just about any application they already use or have designed on their present Windows environment and work with it on the device. But, there is a word of notice at this point that using software on a slate device that's touch-optimised is rather different from making use of them on a personal computer/notebook computer that operates with a mouse e.g. fiddly menus aren't very straightforward to find their way around with a digit. HP have made an effort to prevail over this by integrating a digitiser pen that can be employed as a stylus pen to browse through Windows.
http://www.techsurf.com/wp-content/uploads/Ubuntu-Linux-powered-tablet-PC-named-as-Ekoore-ET10TA.jpg

The HP Slate 500 delivers a comprehensive operating system and this presents you enormous adaptability, access to a huge number of programs dispersed around the net and all the attached plugins - 100 % Adobe Flash compatibility for example. Microsoft have experimented with and were not successful to establish slate-like gadgets with Windows before but the HP Slate seems to be the 1st occasion the operating system and device have performed proficiently alongside one another. HP have a solid record in proceeding part way to this as a result of their selection of convertible tablet-netbooks that have got touch-screens so have implemented a great deal of that understanding to the Slate 500.
What's it for?
The HP slate is intended for "moderate content creation." What this implies is that HP believe that a user can compose emails and type simple written documents on the tablet but anything a lot more sizeable demands a far more regular input - like an actual physical computer keyboard.
How does the HP Slate compare to an Apple iPad?
Do not forget that HP will release a consumer slate that's a lot more akin to the iPad and that's based on the WebOS os so there's a lot more coming from them for the personal user.
It's sensible to point out that the HP Slate 500 operating Windows shouldn't be evaluated against the iPad - its components are significantly more formidable and using a comprehensive OS offers a larger selection of applications, yet at the same time adds significantly more demands on the unit coping with those. The iPad is a media consumption tablet; the HP Slate is a replacement to a full powered laptop...and that come with a major selling price.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is a stunning smart phone powered by Google's 2.2 Android Operating System. This 7-inch device is extremely handy as worked also as a phone, will be available sooner.
